About

Introduction

The Commonwealth Regional Council (CRC) is one of twenty-one regional planning agencies serving the Commonwealth of Virginia. CRC was created to support cooperation, planning, and coordinated action among local governments.

We proudly serve the Counties of Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward.

Who We Are

The roots of today’s Commonwealth Regional Council date back to 1968, when Virginia established Planning District Commissions under the Regional Cooperation Act (§15.2-4207) to promote regional collaboration among local governments. Our region’s commission—formerly known as the Piedmont Planning District Commission—was reorganized and renamed the Commonwealth Regional Council (CRC) in 2005, representing both planning and regional economic leadership for Virginia’s Heartland.

CRC operates as a Planning District Commission guided by local government representatives appointed from each member county. This structure ensures every community has a voice in shaping the region’s future, allows us to respond to regional priorities, leverage state and federal resources, and support initiatives that improve quality of life across Virginia’s Heartland.

CRC serves as an extension of its member governments—providing both expertise and cost savings while strengthening cooperation across the region.
